Chengdu University of Technology is one of the first "Double First Class" universities in China. Its predecessor was Chengdu Geological Exploration Institute founded in 1956, which was one of the three geological colleges in the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China. In 1958, it was renamed Chengdu Geological Institute, in 1993 it was renamed Chengdu Institute of Technology, and in 2001 it was renamed Chengdu University of Technology. In 2010, the school became a jointly built university by the Ministry of Land and Resources and the People's Government of Sichuan Province. In 2019, it became a "Double First Class" construction university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and Sichuan Province. In 2022, the school was selected as a national second round "Double First Class" construction university.

In 2023, Shaanxi Greelan Technology Development Co., Ltd. and the School of Engineering and Technology at Chengdu University of Technology reached a cooperation agreement for an 80 seat language lab. On May 9, 2023, the company's technical personnel officially settled in the campus and began construction. On May 15, the installation, debugging, training, and acceptance of the speech room were completed.
